Maintaining an Older Home? When to Consider Electrical Panel Replacement

Many homes were built several decades ago. While many of the families who live in these graceful older structures love them and enjoy their many benefits over newer housing designs, it is normal to wonder whether the older electrical panel is still able to safely handle today's increased power needs.

If you are wondering whether you should upgrade your home's electrical panel, here is some information to help you decide.

When the Panel Still Uses Fuses

An obvious reason to consider upgrading to a new electrical panel is if your older home is still equipped with a panel that uses fuses. While a fuse panel that is in good condition and operating correctly is technically safe for use, it may be undersized for today's more demanding electrical needs.

Older electrical panels that are equipped with fuses are less convenient than today's panels that feature switches. These switches are designed to flip to the off position when the circuit of power is interrupted by an overload, electrical fault, or other issue.

To return them to service, the homeowner need only flip the breaker back to the on position, which allows the electricity to flow though the circuit and into the home.

Electrical fuses that screw or snap into place, on the other hand, must be replaced each time the circuit is overloaded. This is because the metal strip visible inside the fuse melts when subjected to too much electricity.

This action stops the current, helping to prevent an electrical fire.

Homes that are equipped with electrical fuses should always stock spare fuses in the proper size in preparation for the need to replace one.

When Extension Cord Usage Is Normal

One of the most frustrating things about life in an older home is the lack of conveniently placed electrical outlets. When these homes were designed, most people needed to plug in only some lamps, one television or radio, and basic kitchen and laundry appliances, so only a few circuits and outlets were installed.

Since most homes today have more involved electronic setups, like televisions in every room and a need to charge the family's phones, tablets, and laptops, many begin to rely on extension cords and multi-outlet power bar usage to meet the demand.

Doing this, however, risks overloading circuits and damaging the appliances and gadgets that are connected to electricity via extension cords or power bars.

Homeowners who upgrade their electrical panel can easily add multiple additional electrical circuits and outlets throughout their home to reduce and redistribute the electrical load and lessen the risk of electrical fire or damage to expensive gadgets and appliances.

When Using Two or More Appliances Overloads the Circuit

Older homes that are still equipped with the original electrical panel may lack the size and quantity of circuits needed for the appliances and electrical gadgets of today. Homeowners who find that plugging in a toaster while they are also using another kitchen appliance causes blown fuses or flipped breakers are seeing an example of this type of overload.

Solving this problem can be as simple as adding a larger electrical box; electrical usage can be divided and new circuits can be added to help divide the load.

When There Are Visible Signs of Damage

Noting visible signs of damage to an existing electrical panel is a clear sign that it should be replaced. Metal parts can rust due to age and humidity. Circuit wiring can overheat and cause the insulated coatings to crack, leaving dangerous, exposed wires.

Homeowners who notice any signs of deterioration or overheating, or those that suspect their electrical panel has been struck by lightning or damaged in any way, should consider upgrading to a new panel to reduce the risk of a future electrical fire or outage.

Installing a new electrical panel can help to provide safer electrical service to your home as well as offering you more convenience and efficiency. If you are tired of worrying about the aging or undersized electrical panel in your home, call Palmer Electric Inc today and ask one of our licensed, certified electricians about your options to upgrade.
